7 Safe Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors During COVID-19

Now that the weather is getting warmer, it feels especially hard to be inside all day as we social distance. Fresh air and outdoor time can help children and adults stay active, improve their emotional well-being, lift their mood—all of which are important amid the stress of COVID-19.

Luckily, there are ways to get active outdoors while still practicing physical distancing and following bylaws. Here’s how to stay safe while getting outdoor time.

Try these activities to enjoy some fresh air safely in your backyard, on your balcony, or around your neighbourhood.

1. Outdoor Water Play

Fill a spray bottle and containers with water to create plenty of water play opportunities! Children can also use the spray bottle to water the grass, rocks, flowers, sidewalk or wall outside.

2. Stick Shapes

Found objects are a great tool for gross motor play! Use sticks from around your home to create shapes to jump in, balance on, or to play with toys in a new way. Arrange and rearrange the sticks in as many ways as you want!

3. Marbles Game

Play this giant game of marbles by placing balls in the middle of a chalk circle. Throw another ball into the circle and try to knock them out!

4. Tweezer Toys

Start by feeding a string through a strainer to create a web. Place small toys, stones, twigs, leaves, or other found objects at the bottom and try grabbing them with the tweezers!

5. Tape Stretch

Try reaching as high as you can to stick lightweight objects to a long piece of tape. Include a step stool to reach higher and to practice balance!

6. Water Squeeze

Squeeze water out of plastic bottles, sponges, dishcloths and more into a bowl or garden! This activity is a great way to strengthen those hand and finger muscles that are so important for learning to hold a pencil.

7. Ramps

Use cardboard taped to trees or private outdoor steps to make ramps big and small! Children can roll balls or toy cars down.
