Choosing Your Pregnancy Support Providers

Finding out that you’re expecting a baby can be a very exciting time! But you may also be feeling a bit overwhelmed with so many things to consider. One of the first choices you will make is what type of support you want throughout your pregnancy. You have probably heard of OB-GYNs, Midwives, or Doulas, but you may not know what each type of care offers and how they differ. At BridgeWay we strive to help parents feel confident and supported throughout their parenting journey, and that begins in pregnancy. This resource outlines some of the differences between pregnancy support providers to help you make an informed choice for your family.

It’s important to note that these practitioners often work together to support you through the birth of your baby! So try not to worry too much about making the “right decision”. You can also schedule consultations with different providers to make sure they’re a good fit before making your choice.

OB-GYNs

  • Are medical doctors
  • Are specially trained for high risk births
  • Are surgically trained and can perform C-Sections
  • Deliver babies at the hospital

Midwives

  • Can deliver babies at birthing centres, hospitals, or your home
  • Are able to perform routine checks, order tests and prescribe some medications if necessary
  • Have fewer clients at a time so that they are able to provide longer appointments and one-to-one support throughout your pregnancy birth, and postpartum
  • May provide an option for at-home visits after birth

Note: If you’re interested in a midwife, it’s recommended that you call as soon as you find out you’re pregnant as they tend to fill up quickly. If you change your mind or circumstances change, you can always switch to an OBGYN at any point during your pregnancy!

Doulas

  • Work alongside midwives and OB-GYNs
  • Are consistent emotional support throughout the birthing process
  • Help you make informed decisions and provide support throughout pregnancy, labour, and after birth
  • May offer options for extended support after baby is born
  • Provide the opportunity to ask questions throughout your pregnancy and after birth without having to wait for healthcare visits
  • Provide partner support – guiding and coaching on being the birthing partner

Note: Doulas are not Health Care Providers, they are an emotional support for parents that can be hired in addition to your main provider. Doulas are privately paid, but there are options for no-cost doula care through charities like Birth Mark.

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to birthing your child, and every situation is different. Your choice of provider is entirely up to you, so continue to do research and choose the path that makes you feel the most comfortable and supported.
