About National day for Truth and Reconciliation
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (also known as Orange Shirt Day), is acknowledged every year on September 30th. This is a day to honour children who never came home and the survivors of residential schools, as well as a reminder of the work we need to do to move towards reconciliation.
Click here for a list of community gatherings and places to visit on Septmeber 30th.
Phyllis’s Orange Shirt
Listening to survivors’ stories is one way to learn the truth about residential schools and move towards reconciliation. Phyllis Webstad tells her story about attending a residential school in the picture book Phyllis’s Orange Shirt.
This version of the Phyllis’s Orange Shirt is written in an age appropriate way for young children while still emphasizing the impact of residential schools.

Celebrate Indigenous Cultures with Songs and Stories
When children sing songs and listen to stories, they’re learning literacy skills (such as vocabulary, language, and communication) and social-emotional skills (such as empathy). Songs and stories are also a great way to learn about and celebrate all cultures. In this article, you will find songs, picture books, and more by Indigenous creators, artists and authors for children birth to 6 years! Read more >
