About National day for Truth and Reconciliation
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (also known as Orange Shirt Day), is acknowledged every year on September 30th. This is a day to honour children who never came home and the survivors of residential schools, as well as a reminder of the work we need to do to move towards reconciliation.

Listening to survivors’ stories is one way to learn the truth about residential schools and move towards reconciliation. Phyllis Webstad tells her story about attending a residential school in the picture book Phyllis’s Orange Shirt.

When children sing songs and listen to stories, they’re learning literacy skills (such as vocabulary, language, and communication) and social-emotional skills (such as empathy).
