Position: Contractor, Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program, Registered Dietitian
Reports to: CAPC/CPNP Program Manager
Location: Healthy Start

Job Summary

Registered Dietitians provide nutritional information, support and counselling to prenatal and postnatal women attending the Healthy Start programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Share knowledge and expertise regarding prenatal, lactation, postpartum and infant nutrition
  • Expertise in maternal nutrition and prenatal dietary requirements
  • Basic understanding of common pregnancy-related conditions in order to support clients with empathy and direct them to appropriate care and resources, as advised by their healthcare practitioner
  • Provide one-on-one nutritional counseling with clients in need.
  • Facilitate one monthly workshop per site on a topic (e.g., food budgeting, prenatal/infant nutrition, food preparation techniques and safety) mutually agreed upon with the Program Manager
  • Provide one monthly food demonstration per site
  • Provide accurate, up-to-date nutritional education materials that reflect diverse cultural practices, ensuring content is inclusive and relevant to the variety of foods clients may consume at home, while promoting accessible and culturally appropriate nutritional guidance.
  • Awareness of cultural food practices and taboos during pregnancy
  • Sensitivity to cultural beliefs and values around health and nutrition
  • Work as part of a team with BridgeWay staff, Peel Health Nurses, Social Workers and volunteers
  • Provide a monthly written report to the CAPC/CPNP Program Manager, including number of clients served, description and number of workshops facilitated, highlights and challenges and the number and type of referrals and workshops mad
  • Submit monthly expenses for food demonstration supplies to the Program Manager
  • Documentation and storing of Dietitian records in accordance with the Ontario College of Dietitians
  • Communication of incidents or potential areas of concern to the CAPC/CPNP Program Manager to ensure mutual problem solving between BridgeWay, the Dietitian and Peel Health.
  • Facilitate staff training sessions on healthy eating, as agreed upon in consultation with the Program Manager.
  • Available to occasionally visit the GTIP program to facilitate healthy eating sessions, coordinated in advance with the Program Manager.
  • Ability to explain complex nutritional information in simple, relatable terms
  • Experience creating or adapting culturally relevant educational materials
  • One-on-one counseling tailored to literacy and comprehension levels
  • Group facilitation skills for workshops or support groups
  • Perform other duties as required to support program goals and organizational needs

Qualifications

  • Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of Ontario
  • Up to date insurance as a member of the College of Dietitians of Ontario
  • Clear, current Vulnerable Sector Check • Minimum 1 year experience working with pregnant women
  • Knowledge and expertise in the areas of prenatal nutrition including the nutritional requirements of pregnancy, lactation and the postpartum period, as well as breastfeeding and infant nutrition
  • Demonstrated empathy and a non-judgmental attitude when supporting clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Awareness of how trauma, stress and poverty impact eating behaviours and health
  • Awareness of the needs of mothers experiencing nutritional risk factors such as low income
  • Awareness and understanding of diverse cultural food practices and eating behaviours
  • Knowledge of local resources and referral networks (Peel) to support heathy pregnancy
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary care teams
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated skill in group work and preparation/facilitation of formal presentations
  • Ability to travel to any work site as scheduled
  • Fluency in English, bilingual (Arabic) is an asset
